In a landmark decision announced on Tuesday, the NFL will allow players to take part in the flag football competition at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
The had been some concern among the NFL team owners that the competition would eat into the preparation time for the 2028 season. However an agreement was reached that will allow big-name stars to represent Team USA on home soil.
NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said: “Man, that notion of being able to represent your country, whether you’re going to represent Team USA, Asia, Mexico – whatever – that’s the ultimate dream.”
The news has been greeted warmly by sports fans across the country and has sparked another fascination question: Who might be selected? With the vast majority of NFL players eligible to represent the United States much of the decision might come down to who is willing to play during the offseason.
But there’s a number of genuine superstars who have indicated that they would love to compete for the US team. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes previously opened the door to NFL player involvement, saying: “I think just let the best man win. If that’s flag football guys or that’s NFL guys, let them go out there and train for it.”
Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins wants to be involved. New England Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs was also eager, saying: “It’s a perfect opportunity to get everybody playing one sport, representing America as a whole, and hopefully get a gold medal.”
Aaron Jones of the Minnesota Vikings echoed that sentiment. The running back said of the proposals: “Every other sport gets an opportunity to win a gold medal, and if you’re not serving your country in the military, I feel like that’s the other highest honor that you can represent your country in.”
The NFL has made a conscious effort to help develop flag football competitions, identifying it as a key way to expand the game’s reach. The upcoming Olympic Games offers a major opportunity to boost the visibility of the game and the NFL owners are eager to take full advantage.
