The spring sports season at Salisbury University is known to bring long playoff runs and national championships back to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. And for two of SU’s more successful spring programs, after big wins this past weekend, their seasons remain alive deep into the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Salisbury’s Baseball and Softball programs each won regional titles at home this past weekend and will advance to the NCAA Super Regionals later this week, with spots in the Division III World Series on the line.
Salisbury’s softball team earned its spot in the Super Regionals in exciting fashion. After a 6-0 win over Westminster, back-to-back clutch victories over Mount Union and Pfeiffer helped the Sea Gulls earn their spot in the upcoming Super Regionals.
First up for the Sea Gulls was the 5-3 extra-inning win over Mount Union, where Salisbury got three home runs in the ninth inning from Emily Challender, Karlie Wolfe and Jillian Dawson to take a late lead that they would hold onto. And in the regional title game against Pfeiffer, a walk-off single from Sam Flowers gave Salisbury the 5-4 win and a fourth consecutive regional championship.
SU’s softball team will now go on the road to face Rowan University in a best-of-three series in the Super Regionals this weekend, with the first game set to take place on Thursday, May 22, at 2 p.m. Game 2 will be on Friday at 1 p.m., and a third game will follow immediately after if necessary.
The Salisbury University baseball team had a much easier go of things in its run to a regional championship over the weekend, winning two of its games by 10 runs and another by 11. First up was a 12-2 victory over Johnson & Wales, and the Sea Gulls would follow that win up with a 15-5 win over Baldwin Wallace. And when they faced Baldwin Wallace again with the regional title on the line, Salisbury was dominant again, winning 12-1.
Former Parkside High School pitcher Aidan Brinsfield pitched 8 innings and struck out seven in the regional title win for the Seagulls, giving SU baseball their fifth straight regional championship.
Next up for the Sea Gulls baseball team is the Super Regionals, which will be played at home in Salisbury. The Sea Gulls will host Messiah College in a best-of-three series. Game 1 is set for noon on Friday, May 23. Game 2 will follow on Saturday at 11 a.m. and, if necessary, Game 3 will take place on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
