As rumors swirled about his potential candidacy for other jobs across the country, Georgia head coach Wes Johnson affirmed his commitment to the Bulldogs by signing a contract extension through the 2031 season—which includes a raise—the university announced Wednesday.

The winningest coach through two seasons in Georgia history, Johnson rapidly revitalized an ailing Bulldog program after taking over as head coach prior to the 2024 season. Before Johnson’s arrival, the team had failed to make the NCAA Tournament in six of the previous nine years and hadn’t advanced past the regional round since 2008.

In just under two full regular seasons, Johnson has rewritten expectations in Athens. Georgia reached the super regional round last year and is now fighting for the No. 1 overall national seed with a 42-14 overall mark and 18-12 record in SEC play, which was good for the No. 5 seed in the SEC Tournament.

“We are excited to announce a contract extension for Wes, Angie and their family,” athletic director Josh Brooks said via statement. “It has been incredible watching our baseball program thrive over the past two seasons. Wes is without a doubt one of the elite head baseball coaches in the country, and his commitment to winning at the highest levels is surpassed only by his dedication to making everyone around him better each and every day. We are excited about the future under his leadership.”

Georgia’s ascent under Johnson’s leadership is due in no small part to his aggressive recruiting strategy and analytics-based approach to roster construction.

This year, those methods produced Miami (Ohio) transfer slugger Ryland Zaborowski and UNC Asheville transfer Robbie Burnett, both of whom have put together All-American-caliber seasons despite taking a significant step up in competition. Nolan McCarthy (Kentucky), Devin Obee (Duke) and Brian Curley (VCU) are also among the transfers who have made considerable contributions at Georgia in 2025.

“I’d like to thank Josh Brooks, President Jere Morehead and all our fans for their commitment to Georgia Baseball,” said Johnson. “We have received tremendous support from day one, and that is evident from the $45 million renovation that was completed this year that is vital for our player development, recruiting and the overall fan experience at Foley Field.”

Georgia is set to face No. 12 Oklahoma on Wednesday in the SEC Tournament with the No. 1 overall NCAA Tournament seed still in reach. Regardless of outcome, the Bulldogs are expected to earn a top eight national seed and have College World Series potential. Georgia hasn’t reached Omaha since 2008.
