Management committee makes changes to College Football Playoff seeding

IRVING, Texas (WAFF) – Changes are coming to the College Football Playoff seeding and bye policies this upcoming season.

The College Football Playoff Management Committee, which consists of the 10 FBS conference commissioners and the Director of Athletics at the University of Notre Dame, voted unanimously Tuesday for the modification.

The new policy will give the five highest-ranked conference champions a place in the Playoff, but will not include a bye for the four highest-ranked champions.

The CFP Selection Committee will select the four highest-ranked teams that will receive the first-round bye.

According to the CFP, if a conference champion is ranked outside the top 12, that team would move up to the 12th seed to be included in the Playoff.

If several conference champions aren’t ranked inside the top 12, teams would move up to the 12th seed, 11th seed, 10th seed, etc., based on how many conference champions are outside the top 12.

“After evaluating the first year of the 12-team Playoff, the CFP Management Committee felt it was in the best interest of the game to make this adjustment,” said Rich Clark, executive director of the College Football Playoff. “This change will continue to allow guaranteed access to the Playoff by rewarding teams for winning their conference championship, but it will also allow us to construct a postseason bracket that recognizes the best performance on the field during the entire regular season.”

Other operational policies will remain the same for the 2025-26 season.
