3 scariest SEC baseball teams to face in the 2025 conference tournament
The Montgomery Advertiser’s Adam Cole breaks down why Auburn, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are the toughest teams to play in the 2025 SEC baseball tournament.
Texas baseball entered the SEC tournament as the team to beat in the country, as highlighted by taking the conference by storm in their first regular season away from the Big 12.
Despite that, the Longhorns’ trip to Hoover Met Stadium in Hoover, Alabama was short-lived, as they sustained an early quarterfinal exit vs. Tennessee on Thursday in extra innings.
The loss for the Longhorns was their seventh of the month, and the fourth in their last seven games. It also meant that Texas will have to wait until Memorial Day to officially hear its name called for its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament as an at-large team, as it failed to secure the SEC’s automatic bid.
Asked whether Thursday’s loss to the defending national champions kills any momentum going into the NCAA Tournament, Texas coach Jim Schlossnagle said he doesn’t think so and proceeded to tell a story.
“No, I don’t think so. It’ll be whatever we make it. 2015 (I) was at TCU and we went two and out in the conference tournament, and Coach Garrido, first text message I had, was this is the best thing to ever happen to your team. And that team was the second of four straight College World Series teams,” Schlossnagle said at the SEC tournament on Thursday.
“It’ll be whatever we make it. We’ve got to get home. We’ve got work to do. We’ve got to make sure we’re prepared for next weekend.”
The Longhorns are 42-12 in their first year under Schlossangle, who famously left Texas A&M for Texas during the offseason after the College World Series. Texas is looking to make it back to the CWS for the first time since 2022, which would be their nation’s best 39th trip to Omaha, Nebraska.
Here is where the Longhorns stand ahead of the NCAA Tournament selection:
Texas baseball RPI
Per Warren Nolan Baseball, Texas has the fifth-best RPI ranking in the country. Texas’ loss to Tennessee on Thursday dropped the Longhorns from No. 4 to No. 5 in the NCAA’s RPI rankings.
The Longhorns will head into the NCAA Tournament selection show with a 17 Quad 1 wins, which ranks the most in the country this season by a single program.

In Baseball America’s projections, also released on Friday, the Longhorns would host Northeastern as the No. 2 seed, Kansas State as the No. 3 seed and Houston Christian as the No. 4 seed in the Austin Regional.
11Point7 College Baseball, a college baseball podcast, differs from both D1 Baseball and Baseball America in its projections for the Longhorns’ seeding.
