Why Tennessee baseball has the highest stakes in the SEC tournament
The Montgomery Advertiser’s Adam Cole explains why the Volunteers need to win or make a deep run in the SEC baseball tournament.
Texas A&M baseball’s fight for a conference title and a spot in the NCAA tournament lives on for at least another day.
With their postseason dreams in the balance, the Aggies will face off against LSU in the final game of the quarterfinals of the 2025 SEC baseball tournament, though they’ll have to do so without star Jace LaViolette, who is out for the remainder of the tournament after breaking his hand in a win Thursday against Auburn.
Texas A&M, the tournament’s No. 14 seed, enters the game with a 30-25 record, a disappointing mark for a team that entered the season No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. As of Friday, it’s No. 50 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings – boosted by SEC tournament wins against Mississippi State in the first round and No. 10 Auburn in the second round – and is one of the next four teams out of the projected 64-team NCAA tournament bracket from Baseball America.
Its tournament hopes could get a significant boost Friday.
The spot atop the poll the Aggies held four months ago now belongs to LSU, the tournament’s No. 3 seed. The Tigers are 42-13 and have lost just one series since mid-April, though, notably, that setback came against Texas A&M, which took two of three from LSU the first weekend of May. In the latest Baseball America mock NCAA tournament bracket, LSU is the No. 5 overall national seed and is hosting a regional.
