Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell on cutting down roster spots, state of college sports, and rules being undefined for next season.
Arizona football coach Brent Brennan is the third-worst major college football coach in the country, according to a recent ranking from CBS Sports and 247 Sports.
The site’s college football writers and analysts recently ranked the 68 college football coaches in the power four conferences (SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC) and Brennan came in at No. 66, ten spots behind his ranking last season.
The highest Brennan appeared on any ballot for the voting for the story was No. 62. The lowest was No. 68.
It wrote of Brennan’s ranking: “The team Brennan inherited from Jedd Fisch was seen as a contender in the Big 12 last season. They returned a QB coming off a great season in Noah Fifita and a first-round talent at WR in Tetairoa McMillan. Despite this, the Wildcats stumbled to 4-8 and 2-7 record in the Big 12. Worse, they lost their Big 12 games by an average of 27.3 points, disproving the theory that every game in the Big 12 is close on a weekly basis.”

Only Stanford’s Frank Reich (No. 67) and Mississippi State’s Jeff Lebby (No. 68) were ranked behind Brennan on the list.
The closest other Big 12 coach to Brennan in the ranking? UCF’s Scott Frost, who came in at No. 62.
Interestingly, USA TODAY Sports recently had Frost ranked as its worst coach in the Big 12 for the 2025 season, with Brennan right before him on the list at No. 15 in the conference.
Brennan and the Wildcats are scheduled to open their season hosting Hawaii on Aug. 30 before taking on Weber State at home on Sept. 6, providing a chance for Brennan’s team to get off to a good start in 2025 and potentially prove the low CBS Sports coach ranking wrong.
