FIBA wants to cash in on NCAA’s expansion and protect its investments

As college basketball grows, adding teams to Division I, adding roster spots for all 352 teams and adding ways for teams to permissibly pay their players, it’s natural for the sport to expand its search for players.

More and more now, teams look for international possibilities — after all, basketball is growing in other countries, too. The NBA Draft will have draft picks who played in college and were born in another country. There will be teams in the top 25 and various postseason tournaments because of contributions from their international players.

Since reaching the Final Four in 2010, West Virginia has rostered players from Australia, Canada, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, England, Estonia, France, Ghana, Israel, Mali, Netherlands, Poland, Senegal, Turkey and Ukraine. Committed-yet-unsigned transfer Morris Ugusuk is from Finland, and first-year coach Ross Hodge has already offered Finland’s Jelani Towa a scholarship for the 2026 class.
