West Michigan offensive lineman makes Division-I college football commitment

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Another one of West Michigan’s top high school football prospects will be continuing his career at Central Michigan University.

Grand Rapids West Catholic offensive lineman Jacob Timmer announced his commitment to the Chippewas on Wednesday over Division-I scholarship offers from Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green, Miami (OH), Liberty, Colgate, Cornell, Pennsylvania, Yale and Youngstown State.

Timmer joins Holland West Ottawa linebacker Elijah Reynolds and Forest Hills Central edge rusher Matthew Sexton as West Michigan natives that are part of CMU’s 2026 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-7, 275-pound left tackle, was part of West Catholic’s loaded offensive line that featured four 300-pounders, all of whom helped the Falcons go 7-4 and reach the Division 5 district finals, where they fell to rival GR Catholic Central in a 21-18 thriller.

Considered a three-star prospect and Michigan’s No. 40 prospect in the class of 2026, Timmer emerged as the best blocker along West Catholic’s talented line and didn’t allow a sack, while paving the way for a rushing offense that piled up 2,146 yards at 6.0 yards per carry.

He garnered first team all-state honors from the Michigan Sports Writers and the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association as a junior and is set to become a three-year starter, after earning all-conference accolades as a sophomore.

Timmer is the first offensive line commit in CMU’s 2026 class, which currently includes seven players, six of whom are from the state of Michigan.

In Mount Pleasant, he’ll join a program coming off a 4-8 campaign under former head coach Jim McElwain, who went 33-36 in six seasons atop the program.

In December, the Chippewas hired Matt Drinkall as McElwain’s replacement following a six-year run at Army, where he served as co-offensive coordinator during the Black Knights’ 11-1 season in 2024.
