Louisville baseball: Dan McDonnell on winning NCAA Regional Opener
Louisville baseball coach Dan McDonnell gives an opening statement after defeating East Tennessee State in the NCAA Regional Opener.
- Today’s NCAA baseball regional will be the second time in less than a month that the Louisville Cardinals and Vanderbilt Commodores face each other.
- The winner of the Louisville-Vanderbilt game will play the winner of the elimination bracket at 9 p.m. ET Sunday for a chance to stamp its ticket to the super regionals.
NASHVILLE — Louisville baseball coach Dan McDonnell didn’t want his players to watch the second regional game between top-seeded Vanderbilt and fourth-seeded Wright State on Friday evening.
Instead, he encouraged the Cardinals to spend that time with their family members who traveled to see them play in the program’s first postseason since 2022.
“We take a lot of respect in our opponent,” McDonnell said. “We spend a lot of time on the scouting reports, but I want these guys just trusting their ability, believing in themselves. Our confidence is contagious, as we like to say. Let us (the coaching staff) worry about who we’re playing and let these guys just get ready to play tomorrow.”
For outfielder Eddie King, Jr., part of the preparation for baseball is taking his mind off of it.
“I think that’s huge for me,” he said. “I know a lot of people are different, but I try not to think about baseball too much because then I just start overthinking. But I think just relaxing with my family, it’ll be really nice for me.”
King, Jr. and the rest of the Cardinals had the night off ahead of their 9 p.m. game today against the Commodores at Hawkins Field.
This will be the second time in less than a month that the rivals have faced each other. U of L notched a 5-4 win over the Commodores, ranked 10th at the time, at home on May 6. Vandy leads the all-time series, though, 29-13.
The winner of the game will play the winner of the elimination bracket at 9 p.m. ET Sunday for a chance to stamp its ticket to the super regionals.
