Southern Miss baseball vs. Miami live updates: NCAA Regional score, highlights

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss baseball will clash with No. 3 seed Miami in the Hattiesburg Regional final June 1.

First pitch is set for 6:36 p.m.

The host Golden Eagles (46-15) has fought their way out of the loser’s bracket, beating Columbia 8-1 earlier June 1. It’s the fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance that Southern Miss has reached the regional final.

Moments after eliminating Columbia, Southern Miss coach Christian Ostrander said his team’s approach to the Hurricanes (33-24) will be the same.

“Nothing changes,” he said. “Just gotta go out there and fight to win this game tonight and force it to a winner-take-all.”

Should the Golden Eagles defeat Miami, it would force a winner-take-all game on June 2 at Pete Taylor Park.

“They’re in the driver’s seat – whatever, doesn’t matter,” Ostrander said of Miami. “We’re gonna go play baseball and compete. You never know what can happen.”

The Golden Eagles got a 3-run blast off the bat of Joey Urban to make it a 9-0 start against Miami.

Carson Paetow busted out of deep slump with a 2-run single in the top of the first inning versus Miami.

Freshman third baseman Drey Barrett reached on a fielder’s choice during the top of the first inning, but he appeared to injure his knee. After advancing to second base, Barrett came out of the game and was replaced by Ty Long.

A Jake Cook leadoff single paid dividends when he came around to score on a Matthew Russo single. Ben Higdon added to the lead with an RBI single that scored Nick Monistere to make it 2-0.

Golden Eagles starting shortstop Ozzie Pratt is not in the starting lineup against Miami. He was hit by a pitch during the Columbia game earlier June 1 and is in concussion protocol, according to a program spokesperson.
