Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Terron Armstead has officially announced his retirement from the NFL after a distinguished 12-season career.
The 33-year-old, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, cited ongoing knee problems and the physical demands of the game as the primary factors influencing his decision.

Armstead‘s journey to the NFL was unconventional. Drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, he quickly established himself as a formidable force on the offensive line.
Over his career, Armstead started 131 of 135 games, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023. He spent nine seasons with the Saints before joining the Dolphins in 2022.
Despite his success, Armstead‘s career was marred by injuries. He acknowledged that he had been dealing with a serious knee issue since his third year in the league. The pain from these injuries often left him unable to walk independently for days, relying heavily on painkillers to manage the discomfort and remain game-ready.
In a candid revelation, Armstead shared, “I was only able to play under the pain meds.” This admission underscores the extent to which he pushed through physical limitations to continue his professional journey.
Decision to retire
Armstead emphasized that his decision to retire was not due to a lack of passion for the game but rather the result of his body’s inability to keep up with the demands of professional football.
He stated, “I love the mental and strategic elements of football, but my declining physical abilities and extensive injury history compelled me to step away.”
In his final season, Armstead managed to play 15 games, marking his most appearances in a single season since 2019. However, the toll on his body became increasingly evident, leading to his decision to retire.
Over the course of his career, Armstead earned approximately $115.8 million. By retiring early, he forfeited $15.5 million remaining on his contract with the Dolphins. This decision reflects his commitment to prioritizing his long-term health over immediate financial gain.
