The Houston Texans are signing Nick Chubb, pending his physical, which could signal a trade before the 2025 regular season starts. According to several reports, the team is finally salvaging the backfield unit to add some support behind running back Joe Mixon and to bolster the offensive department for quarterback C.J. Stroud, since he had one of the worst campaigns last year. However, this spells bad news for backup Dameon Pierce, who may become available on the trade block after just posting 293 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns last season. Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former Florida product had some promise coming into his rookie season after almost notching 1,000 rushing yards, but lost his starting role the following season to Devin Singletary after struggling to get any production for the offense.
The running back unit was one of the worst for the Texans up until this past season, where Mixon was able to bring some relief. However, they have more backup coming in, and they’re hoping they can rejuvenate Chubb’s career in Houston. This doesn’t leave room for Pierce, who is entering the final year of his contract, and it’ll be better to make him available for a trade rather than risking his potential value. He might not net the best investment in return, but these five teams could offer a late draft pick for the running back to salvage their departments.

Possible Next Teams
New Orleans Saints
Since the New Orleans Saints don’t have an adequate signal-caller for the 2025 season, they will probably have to depend on the run game. Even though Alvin Kamara is one of the league’s best runners, they should have some type of backup help to keep him fresh. After releasing Jamaal Williams, the Saints have yet to find a replacement. Pierce is on a rookie deal and could fit into the budget that the Saints don’t have.
Dallas Cowboys
Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys have one of the worst running back units in the league. Even though they signed Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, no one should expect them to last beyond a season. 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue shows a lot of promise, but they could bring in another cheap running back for at least a season to test the waters like Pierce.
Kansas City Chiefs
However, Isiah Pacheco is on the hot seat entering the 2025 campaign. Veteran Kareem Hunt had an enormous 2024 season in Pacheco’s absence, but he’s running out of gas. This is why they got Elijah Mitchell to catch those short passes as well, but they could trade for Pierce to continue to pound in redzone situations when Hunt can’t.
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens probably need a running back sooner rather than later, despite the Derrick Henry contract extension. They’re hoping that Keaton Mitchell can turn things around in the backend of this unit, but the chances of that happening are slim. The Ravens should add more security and put Henry in the best position to remain fresh for the postseason, and Pierce could be a low-risk, high-reward investment for Baltimore.
Washington Commanders
The Commanders have everything going right for them in their offensive unit except for the running back position. Brian Robinson Jr. still has some hope, but he’s been average at best, depending on how quarterback Jayden Daniels will utilize him. Austin Ekeler isn’t lasting another season with this team after this year, so they could trade for Pierce to equip Daniels with more weapons.
