There’s no doubt that the current quarterback competition on the Cleveland Browns is the most talked-about in the NFL right now-possibly even in league history-mainly due to the presence of one of today’s most polarizing players: rookie Shedeur Sanders.

From his time at the University of Colorado, coached by his father Deion Sanders, Shedeur was already a media sensation in the United States. He showed a very solid level of play, especially in his final college season, and was projected to be a first-round draft pick. However, his stock surprisingly collapsed, and it wasn’t until the fifth round that the Cleveland Browns selected him.
Once considered a future NFL star, Shedeur now finds himself fighting an uphill battle in Cleveland. Currently, he sits at the bottom of the depth chart behind veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, as well as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, who was selected two rounds earlier than Sanders.

Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders face a tough outlook
In recent weeks, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said there is an “open competition” for the team’s starting quarterback job. However, reports indicate that Stefanski privately favors Joe Flacco, with whom he worked a couple of years ago and had solid results.

Starting Flacco makes perfect sense, especially considering that the Browns face a brutal early-season schedule. Putting in either Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders would be extremely risky, according to analyst Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com.
“Flacco and Pickett are veterans. Gabriel (third-round pick) and [Shedeur] Sanders (fifth-round pick) are rookies,” Pluto wrote. “The Browns’ first six opponents had a combined 71-31 record last season. The Browns went 3-14 in 2024. Does it make sense to throw a low-round rookie quarterback into that early schedule?”
This logic holds up-especially considering the Browns open the season against the Bengals, Ravens, Packers, Lions, Vikings, and Steelers. All of those teams are serious contenders in their respective conferences. It wouldn’t be surprising if Cleveland started the season 0-6.
