Windhorst Says NBA Offseason Will ‘Happen Faster Than Normal’ amid Draft, Trade Rumors

ESPN insider Brian Windhorst doesn’t believe NBA fans will have to wait long after the 2025 NBA Finals for significant trades to begin taking place this offseason.

“The NBA offseason is going to happen faster than normal,” Windhorst said Tuesday on ESPN’s First Take.

“I think most of the action this offseason is going to occur around the draft,” Windhorst added. “Typically, we get most of the action between June 30 and about July 3. I think this year, because it’s not really a free agent year… and potentially, there’s gonna be three or four picks in the lottery that might be available, might be movable. Teams moving out, teams moving up, teams moving back. So, that’s going to be attached to bigger deals.

“Let’s put it this way: Shams [Charania] has cleared his calendar, and he’s preparing to work his hardest around the draft, and we are going to right from the NBA Finals into the offseason, headlong. You’re going to get your action very soon.”

If the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder goes the distance, the series will wrap up in Oklahoma City on Sunday, June 22. The NBA draft is set to begin three days later in Brooklyn on Wednesday, June 25.

NBA insider Jake Fischer recently reported that the Thunder, Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic have been “mentioned by rival executives as teams to monitor for potential trades up into the late lottery.”

All three teams hold multiple first round picks, with the Thunder holding Nos. 15 and 24, the Nets claiming Nos. 19, 26 and 27 and the Magic controlling Nos. 16 and 25.

Even if Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn’t get moved this summer— Windhorst recently said on ESPN’s Get Up that the Milwaukee Bucks are “not looking” to move on from the two-time NBA MVP— changes in draft positioning could lead to a flurry of trades within the next two weeks.
