Ohio State freshmen who could make an impact in 2025

QB TAVIEN ST. CLAIR

After spring practice, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day referred to the quarterback competition as “a two-horse race.” The two competitors were redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz and redshirt freshman Julian Sayin. However, Day also recognized true freshman Tavien St. Clair, noting that he just “needs more” and “more at-bats.”

While St. Clair is unlikely to win the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback job over Kienholz or Sayin during fall camp, he still may have a role to play. The Scarlet and Gray have relied on third-string quarterbacks before.

St. Clair was a five-star prospect and the No. 3 quarterback in the 2025 class. Hailing from Bellefontaine, Ohio, St. Clair has flourished over the past few years, both physically and mentally, in his game. Having faced mostly lesser competition in high school, St. Clair was anticipated to require time to adjust to the collegiate level. However, the freshman demonstrated he might be ahead of schedule during fall camp, appearing comfortable under pressure and delivering impressive passes. His performance in the spring game, which started with two interceptions, exhibited the resilience necessary to play for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes hope St. Clair’s only snaps come during mop-up duty this season. However, the Scarlet and Gray could do worse than St. Clair in an emergency role.
