Franklin three-star athlete Luke Thompson committed to Tennessee football, he announced on June 14 via social media.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Thompson, who played last season at wide receiver and defensive back, committed to the Vols after an official visit to Knoxville on June 6, according to 247Sports.
“I had to warm up to the fact of playing safety,” he told GoVols247. “I’ve always wanted to play receiver. … I just had to set that aside and focus on being a safety. And a program like Tennessee, I’m very fortunate just to be on the team.”
He is the No. 48 athlete in the 2026 class and the No. 19 player in Tennessee, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Thompson also has tweeted about offers from Miami (Ohio), MTSU, Army, Navy and Air Force.
The two-way player was The Tennessean’s Region 6-6A Athlete of the Year in 2024 in one of the toughest regions in Tennessee high school football.
Thompson will become a third-generation Tennessee athlete and both parents were All-Americans. His father, Kevin Thompson, was a decathlete on the track team and a walk-on wide receiver as a freshman for the football team. His mother, Sharon (Dickie) Thompson, ran cross country and track for the Lady Vols. His grandfather, Joe Thompson, was a wide receiver for the Vols.
Thompson is Tennessee’s 10th commitment in the 2026 class and the fifth in-state player for the Vols. The other commitments are quarterback Faizon Brandon, wide receiver Tyreek King, tight end Carson Sneed, offensive lineman Gabriel Osenda, wide receiver Tyran Evans, linebacker Braylon Outlaw, defensive lineman C.J. Edwards, defensive lineman Zach Groves, and safety K.J. McClain.
