Oregon State pitcher Dax Whitney and coach Mitch Canham talk about the Beavers’ College World Series win over Louisville.
Omaha, Neb. — Oregon State baseball launched itself into the winners’ bracket of the Men’s College World Series with a heart-pounding walk-off win over Louisville in their opener.
Now, the Beavers will look to stay on track — and take down the nation’s hottest team in the process
No. 8 OSU (48-14-1) will face off with No. 13 Coastal Carolina (54-11) on June 15 at 4 p.m. PT at Charles Schwab Field. The Chanticleers beat Arizona, 7-4, in their tournament opener.

The two programs have met just once; on March 10, 2019, they battled to a 4-4 tie during a neutral-site game in Seattle.
With 24 straight wins, Coastal Carolina owns the longest winning streak in the nation. It has not lost a game since April 22. Kevin Schnall’s squad won the Conway Regional, then upset No. 4 Auburn in the Auburn Super Regional to reach this point.
“Facing good teams is what we do, and it’s what we do in Omaha, especially,” OSU second baseman AJ Singer said following the Beavers’ win over Louisville. “There are eight good teams here. No matter who you play, it’s gonna be a dogfight. I think we go in with the same confidence that Coastal has. They’re a good ballclub.”
After riding a strong outing from freshman ace Dax Whitney during their win over the Cardinals, the Beavers will turn to sophomore Ethan Kleinschmit against the Chanticleers. Earlier this week, the Mount Angel product and former Kennedy High School star was named a third-team All-American by American Baseball Coaches Association.
Kleinschmit (8-4, 3.54 earned run average) has struck out 106 batters and walked just 33 in 86 ⅓ innings across 16 starts during his debut season with OSU.
Coastal Carolina will counter with 6-foot-8 sophomore right-hander Jacob Morrison (11-0, 2.15 ERA).

Top of the 4th inning — Coastal Carolina 4, Oregon State 1
Dean Mihos ripped a leadoff single. OSU got a bit of luck when the next batter, Ty Dooley, popped out on a bunt attempt.
After a walk to Wells Sykes, Ethan Kleinschmit rolled Coastal leadoff man into what should have been an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. But AJ Singer whiffed on the ground ball, and a run scored on the error.
Then, Sykes scored on a wild pitch from Kleinschmit.
Beavers’ left fielder Gavin Turley made a tremendous running catch in deep left field for the second out of the inning.
Easton Talt smashed a leadoff homer over the right field fence to get the Beavers on the board. It’s OSU’s first home run of the 2025 College World Series.
Aiva Arquette and Gavin Turley each nearly went yard, too. But Arquette’s line drive was caught at the base of the right field wall, and Turley’s resulted in a loud out at the warning track.
Ethan Kleinschmit seems to have found his groove. He got two quick outs before surrendering a softly-hit infield single to Blagen Pado.
On the next pitch, though, Kleinschmit rolled Colby Thorndyke into an inning-ending 4-6.
Tyce Peterson drilled a one-out single to left, then moved up to second on a fielding error by the Chanticleers’ outfielder Sebastian Alexander. But Peterson was left stranded as Jacob Krieg and
Ty Dooley drew a leadoff walk for Coastal. But he ran into an out later in the inning on a ground ball to OSU shortstop Aiva Arquette.
Ethan Kleinschmit struck out Sebastian Alexander for the second time today to end the inning.
Gavin Turley smashed a two-out single to get the Beavers their first hit of the day. But Wilson Weber grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.
Oregon State lefty Ethan Kleinschmit got off to a nightmare start in his first CWS outing.
The first batter of the game, Caden Bodine, reached on an error by shortstop Aiva Arquette. Kleinschmit was called for a balk one batter later and loaded the bases when he walked Blake Barthol and hit Walker Mitchell with a pitch.
Then, Colby Thorndyke tagged him for a bases-clearing double to give Coastal an early 3-0 lead.
Early in the inning, OSU righty AJ Hutcheson began to get loose in the bullpen.
