BOSTON — What was unthinkable this morning is now reality: The Red Sox have officially traded Rafael Devers.
Boston officially announced the blockbuster trade, which was reported earlier Sunday night. The deal will send Devers — and his entire contract — to the Giants for left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, minor league outfielder James Tibbs III and righty pitcher Jose Bello.
Hicks, who has started and relieved this year, will join the Red Sox in Seattle early this week. Harrison was optioned to Triple-A Worcester but, like Hicks, is on the 40-man roster. The Red Sox lost some left-handed relief depth by designating Zach Penrod, who is with the WooSox, for assignment to clear a 40-man spot.
Tibbs, ranked as San Francisco’s No. 3 prospect (and the 13th pick in last year’s draft), was at High-A Eugene in the Giants system but will go to Double-A Portland. Bello is in Rookie ball.
The Red Sox will add Hicks, sidelined since June 3 with inflammation in his “right great toe”, on the 15-day injured list Monday. They’ll need to call someone up to take Devers’ spot on the active roster.
No Red Sox official has officially commented on the Devers blockbuster yet. According to the club, team president/CEO Sam Kennedy and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow will be available on a Zoom call at a time TBA on Monday. That’s expected to be in the late afternoon after Breslow, who didn’t fly with the team Sunday night (chief baseball executives don’t go on every trip) travels to Seattle to be with the club. Boston’s clubhouse in Seattle will open to reporters at 6:45 p.m. ET.
The Giants are off Monday so Devers’ debut for them will come Tuesday against the Guardians at home. The Red Sox, coincidentally, are in town from Friday to Sunday and will face their former slugger for three days then.
