CU Buffs men’s basketball to face Australian national team

The trip Down Under will include a big challenge for the Colorado men’s basketball team.

The Buffaloes’ four-game run of exhibition contests next month in Australia will include a July 31 matchup against the Australian Boomers, the country’s national team.

Colorado is scheduled to visit Australia July 23 through August 5. For the Australian Boomers, the contest will provide a tune-up ahead of the FIBA Asia Cup. Last week, CU announced that former Buffs guard and staff member Nate Tomlinson, a native of Australia, is rejoining the staff.

“The one thing about Australian basketball is that there’s a lot of pride. There are a lot of good players who have come to the United States to play college basketball, who are in the NBA from that country, and the Boomers are their team,” CU head coach Tad Boyle in a release. “And one thing I’ve learned, not only about international basketball competition but specifically about Australia, is that there’s a lot of national pride. And so, when you put on that Boomers uniform as an Australian, it means something, and those guys play like it means something to them.

“So it’ll be a heck of a challenge for us, heck of an opportunity for us to get better. You want to play against the best, so we’re trying to do that. We are really fortunate and happy to have this opportunity.”

The NCAA permits 10 practices ahead of international exhibition trips. In Australia, CU is scheduled to visit Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns and Gold Coast, which will be the site of the matchup against the Australian Boomers.
