Major League Baseball draft hopefuls will flock to Phoenix this week for the MLB draft combine, a fifth annual event welcoming 322 prospects to Chase Field with an opportunity to work out for team representatives June 17-21.

There’s plenty of Wisconsin flavor at the showcase, including a high school arm and four college players hailing from the state.

Keep an eye on these players, all of whom could hear their names called early in the MLB draft, which lines up with MLB all-star week and takes place July 13-14. Parts of the combine will air on MLB Network.

Gavin Kilen (Milton), second baseman

The University of Tennessee alumnus looks like he’ll be the highest-selected Wisconsin player, ranked 17th by MLB Pipeline in its list of 200 prospects. Initially taken in the 13th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2022, Kilen instead went to college (first at Louisville), and the junior had a breakout season this year in his new home. He was named first-team All-American by Perfect Game after batting .357 with 15 homers and 46 RBIs in 53 games. He was named first-team all-Southeastern Conference.

Mitch Voit (Whitefish Bay), second baseman

At the University of Michigan, Voit has played all over the diamond, including as a relief pitcher. An injury pushed him toward a focus on hitting, and the junior reached base at a .471 clip this year, with 14 homers, 60 RBIs and a .346 average in 56 games. That earned him a nod on the all-region team and second-team All-American by Perfect Game.

Nate Snead (South Milwaukee), right-handed pitcher

Playing at Tennessee, Snead pitched prominently in relief for the Volunteers squad that won the program’s first national championship last year. Capable of reaching triple digits, Snead has a career 3.67 ERA in two seasons at Tennessee, with 103 strikeouts in 125 innings.

Rory Fox (Catholic Memorial), right-handed pitcher

His third year starting for Notre Dame yielded good results, with a 3.58 ERA in 14 starts and just shy of a strikeout per inning in his 65 frames. The 6-3 right-hander was named third-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference this season.

Peter Kussow (Arrowhead), right-handed pitcher

The only Wisconsin high-school player invited to the combine is the 6-5 right-hander from Arrowhead, already capable of throwing 95 mph as an 18-year-old, with a strong slider, to boot. He’s committed to Louisville. He struck out 16 batters against Kettle Moraine in a game earlier this year, needing just 93 pitches to do it.

Another name to know: Cade Obermueller, University of Iowa

Ranked No. 51 by MLB Pipeline in the draft class, the University of Iowa left-handed pitcher is the son of former Brewers right-handed pitcher Wes, who pitched with the Brewers from 2003 to 2005, appearing in 60 games with the Brewers.

Another name to know: Carsten Sabathia, Houston

The first baseman spent two seasons at Georgia Tech before arriving in Houston. He’ll be looking to get drafted the same year his father, former Brewers ace CC Sabathia, gets inducted into the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.
