The La Familia roster is nearing completion ahead of the 2025 edition of The Basketball Tournament. Two more pieces appear to have been added to the puzzle, Archie Goodwin and Kahlil Whitney.
The TBT typically slowly rolls out roster announcements to increase fanfare. On Monday, we learned Ansley Almonor will represent the Mark Pope era on the La Familia roster. An astute observer at KSBoard brought to light the recent additions, noting Whitney and Goodwin were on the updated roster on the TBT website.
The name Kahlil Whitney has not been mentioned too often around Big Blue Nation in recent years. He was a five-star talent, ranked among the top 15 players in the 2019 recruiting class. The hype surrounding “The Dragon” did not translate into production. He started in eight games as a Wildcat, but left the program in January of 2020 after only appearing in 18 games and averaging 3.3 points per contest.
Whitney never played another college basketball game. He took the G League route and bounced around to a few different international leagues. Last month, he shared a post on social media reflecting on his basketball career. “I probably just needed a hug… But instead I fell off mentally and had to gain it all back!!” Hopefully, the TBT can provide a redemption arc for Whitney.
Goodwin did not lead the Kentucky Wildcats to NCAA Tournament success, but he’s been a star on the TBT circuit for years. The Eberlein Drive appeared in a TBT title game and last year reached the semifinals, in large part thanks to Goodwin. The lengthy guard averaged 13.8 points per game on 36.7% shooting from the floor. He ranked fourth in the tournament with 20 assists over five games.
Nate Sestina stole the headlines for his spectacular shooting throughout La Familia’s 2024 run through the TBT, but it was all made possible because Eric Bledsoe was an outstanding creator. By adding Goodwin, this team has a lengthy athlete who can drive and create open looks for his fellow former Cats. He also might have some extra motivation. Eberlein Drive will be playing in the Lexington Regional this summer.

The winner of the Lexington Regional will advance to TBT’s quarterfinals on July 29. The semifinals will be held on July 31, and TBT’s $1 million championship will be played on Aug. 3.
