NBA Execs See Draft Day 1 as Busiest Day of Offseason Due to Limited Free Agent Class

While the first day of NBA free agency is typically filled with activity, there’s belief around the league that the 2025 NBA draft will be the most hectic time of the offseason.

ESPN’s Tim Bontemps cited “several sources” that said the busiest day of the offseason will be during the first round of the draft on June 25, with a “limited free agent class” playing a role in the reasoning.

“It just feels like there is going to be more activity than even normally is,” an executive told Bontemps.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst also said that he thinks “most of the action this offseason is going to occur around the draft” during a Tuesday appearance on First Take.

While the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly eyeing Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the draft, the remaining order of teams could change before June 25.

The Philadelphia 76ers, owners of the No. 3 selection, have reportedly discussed moving up to the San Antonio Spurs’ No. 2 choice already.

On Sunday, the Memphis Grizzlies traded Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic while receiving Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four first-round picks and one first-round pick swap. This included the No. 16 overall selection in the 2025 draft.

As the draft draws closer, front offices across the league seem to be preparing for lots of action on the trade market during the first round.
