Cubs game vs. Brewers Wednesday rescheduled due to rain

The Cubs’ game against the Brewers on Wednesday at Wrigley Field was postponed due to rain. The team made the announcement more than two hours before game time, with inclement weather forecasted throughout the evening.

The game was rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Aug. 18, when the Brewers return to Wrigley Field for a now five-game series. The makeup game is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. and the second game 7:05 p.m.

Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon, who was originally scheduled to start Wednesday, will be pushed back to the series finale Thursday afternoon, manager Craig Counsell said.

Counsell declined to comment on how the rain-out may affect the pitching plan for the following series, when the Cubs take on the Mariners this weekend at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs won the first game of the home series against the Brewers by a score of 5-3 Tuesday. That brought their season record against the Brewers, who occupy second place in the National League Central, to 3-1.

The Cubs (45-28) have a commanding 6 ½ -game lead in the division. But the battle for second place is tight. Going into Wednesday, the Brewers, Reds and Cardinals were all within a half a game of each other.

Four teams in the division have records above .500, with the Pirates (29-45) as the outlier.

All-Star Game Chicago-bound?

The Chicago City Council passed a plan to enhance security measures around Wrigley Field, according to a news release from the team on Wednesday.

This latest development is believed to address the major barrier that’s stood in the way of the Cubs hosting an MLB All-Star Game in recent years. Commissioner Rob Manfred has previously named the Cubs as a candidate to host as soon as 2027.

The team said in a statement: “The Chicago Cubs thank Mayor Johnson’s administration, Ald. Bennett Lawson and the Chicago City Council, as well as Gov. Pritzker for partnering to enhance the safety of the entire neighborhood and the three million fans who visit Wrigley Field each year. From day one, the Ricketts family has committed to being good neighbors to the city and our neighborhood, and this security investment is the latest example of that pledge.”

Injury updates

Right-hander Eli Morgan (inflamed ulnar nerve) had a setback in his rehab appearance Tuesday with Triple-A Iowa, Counsell revealed. Morgan issued two walks and allowed four runs in ⅔ of an inning, and his elbow injury flared again. Morgan has been on the injured list since mid-April.

“He’s going to have to see the doctors again, and we’re going to have to reassess that one,” Counsell said.

Reliever Porter Hodge (oblique, hip impingement) threw a hitless inning Tuesday, in his second rehab outing for Iowa. He’ll have at least one more Triple-A rehab appearance, Counsell said.

Left-hander Shota Imanaga (strained left hamstring) remains on track to join Triple-A Iowa to make a rehab start Friday. It will be the third start of his build-up, as he continues progressing toward a return to the rotation.
