EA Sports College Football 26 reveals gameplay deep dive

EA Sports College Football 26 revealed the video game’s full gameplay on Friday, with a detailed look at player management, new plays coming to the game and the latest updates to position groups. The video game will be released on July 10th.

Among the most notable changes is a revamped effort behind home-field advantage and 2,800 new plays with 45 new formations. In this year’s edition, real-life head coaches will be walking the sidelines. Alabama’s Ryan Williams and Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith are on the standard cover, while a slew of college football head coaches and players, along with former stars, are on the deluxe edition.

EA also revealed that custom zones on defense and stunts and twists are coming to the game. The video game will also include an “Out of Body” experience, which, according to EA, is “when a player starts to cook, their physical abilities receive substantial boosts. If the player already holds a Platinum-tier ability, it automatically upgrades to the new Heisman tier, featuring enhanced effects and powerful new functionality directly inspired by player feedback.”

Users will also be able to silence the crowd and swag out, meaning EA has introduced the ability to walk or jog around after an interception or touchdown. College Football 26 is also committing to a revamped home-field advantage. Users will experience louder environments, more distractions and clocks on the screen shaking and at times disappearing. This is even more noticeable during night and rivalry games.

For as long as football video games have existed, making substitutions meant pausing the game, diving into menus, and breaking the flow of the action. EA is now introducing Dynamic Subs, meaning real-time roster management directly on the field. Subs can now be made seamlessly during pre-play.

Here is a breakdown of the new formations coming to the game: Penn State Shotgun Gate, Penn State Swinging Gate Variants, Ole Miss Wildcat Deuce Wing, Rice Pistol Wingback, Western Kentucky Power I Hulk, ECU Trips Off Over Weak and Duke Wide Y Off Trips Stack, among others.

“Last year, when we brought back the pride, pageantry, atmospheres and traditions of college football, the response from fans was overwhelming,” EA vice president of marketing Evan Dexter said about EA Sports College Football 26. “With College Football 26, we’re celebrating our sophomore season with two generational sophomore wide receivers on the cover, and we can’t wait for the world to experience even more heart and authenticity across athletes, stadiums, coaches and fans.”

The original EA college football video game franchise ran from 1998 until 2013. Moving from the Bill Walsh College Football moniker to NCAA Football, the annual game was eventually discontinued. The game returned in July for the first time in more than a decade. Now EA Sports College Football is returning for its second consecutive year.

EA announced last fall that the College Football 25 franchise was the largest new console game launch in North America in 2024. EA also announced the video game had seen 6.5 million unique players to date. Quick math shows EA brought in more than $400 million in sales from the game.
