Monday’s hockey: Ovechkin injured after tying NHL record; Campbell sent to Griffins

Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin (8) celebrates after scoring against the Golden Knights for a hat trick during the third period in Las Vegas.

Salt Lake City – Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin tied one NHL record in his pursuit of another before leaving during the third period with an apparent left leg injury.

Ovechkin scored twice on Utah goaltender Connor Ingram on Monday night, making Ingram the 178th different goaltender he has scored on in his 20-year NHL career. He is tied for the league record with Jaromir Jagr. His first goal came with 8:55 left in the first period. He struck again 5:38 into the second.

Karel Vejmelka replaced Ingram in the net for Utah immediately following Ovechkin’s second goal.

Ovechkin went to the Capitals’ bench with an apparent lower leg injury 5:30 into the third after colliding with Utah forward Jack McBain and crumpling to the ice.

On Sunday night, he tied Patrick Marleau for the second most in NHL history by scoring on former Capitals goalie Ilya Samsonov.

With Monday’s goals, Ovechkin needs only 27 goals to surpass Wayne Gretzky for the NHL career-goals record. The 39-year-old Russian has tallied 15 goals through 18 games, moving him up to 868 career goals in his 20th season.

He’s scored five in the last two games alone. Ovechkin’s two goals helped the Capitals to a 6-2 win over the Kraken.

PWHL returning to Detroit March 16

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is returning to Detroit.

The league on Monday launched the PWHL Takeover Tour, a slate of nine regular-season, neutral-site games that includes a game at Little Caesars Arena between the defending champion Minnesota Frost and the New York Sirens on Sunday, March 1, 2025.

Last year, Detroit drew a crowd of 13,736 in hosting one of the league’s two neutral-site games — with the other played in Pittsburgh.

This year’s tour will begin in Seattle on Jan. 5 and conclude in St. Louis on March 29.

“The PWHL Takeover Tour lets us showcase our game and exceptional athletes across a wider North American footprint — an exciting moment for our players and an important move for our business as we consider expansion,” said Amy Scheer, PWHL senior vice president of business operations.

Wings assign Campbell to Griffins

The Detroit Red Wings assigned goaltender Jack Campbell to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Monday.

Campbell cleared waivers after he returned from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. The 32-year-old entered the program on Oct. 4 to receive care indefinitely.

In July, Detroit signed Campbell to a one-year contract worth $775,000. Before entering the Player Assistance Program, he appeared in one pre-season game for the Red Wings against the Buffalo Sabres, where he allowed two goals on 22 shots for a .909 save percentage in 24:46 of ice time.

The Port Huron native made his NHL debut in 2013 after being selected in the first round (11th overall) by the Dallas Stars in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The netminder, who has previously suited up for the Stars, the Los Angeles Kings, the Maple Leafs and the Edmonton Oilers, has made 176 career appearances since 2013, with a 93-52-18 record and a save percentage of .909.

In the AHL, Campbell has a 2.72 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage and a 117-82-28 record through 235 regular-season games.
