As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders finds himself at the center of both praise and controversy. Touted as a top-10 pick by many draft analysts, Sanders’ strong performance on the field is now being overshadowed by sharp criticism from a former NFL scout who’s raising red flags that could potentially impact his draft value.
Former Jets scout criticizes Shedeur Sanders’ off-field behavior and leadership style
Daniel Kelly, a former scout for the New York Jets, reignited the debate around Sanders on Sunday by pointing to an incident from last season where Sanders reportedly had a verbal confrontation with a Texas Tech ball boy. Taking to social media, Kelly didn’t hold back.
“Imagine an NFL team entrusting their franchise to a quarterback who got into a verbal confrontation with a ball boy. Shedeur Sanders is a PR disaster waiting to happen. Nobody is going to be able to say, ‘We didn’t see this coming,’” Kelly tweeted.
This isn’t the first time Kelly has taken aim at Sanders. He previously criticized the quarterback for skipping physical drills at the NFL Scouting Combine — a move that some saw as strategic, but others viewed as evasive.
On-field talent undeniable, but questions linger
Despite the off-field concerns, Sanders’ numbers speak volumes. In his final season at Colorado, he threw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns, while also rushing for four scores. He helped guide the Buffaloes to a 9–4 record and earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors. Over two seasons with Colorado — after transferring from Jackson State — Sanders amassed over 7,300 passing yards and 64 touchdowns, showing consistent production and elite-level decision-making.
He also had the unique advantage of being coached by his Hall of Fame father, Deion Sanders, which has drawn both admiration and skepticism from the scouting community.

Shedeur’s No. 2 jersey was recently retired during Colorado’s spring game, underscoring his impact on the program. But with the draft just days away, teams now face a tough question: do they trust the talent, or fear the noise?
Whether the criticism from Kelly will sway front offices remains to be seen, but it’s clear Sanders’ draft narrative is no longer just about stats — it’s about perception, leadership, and how he’ll handle the NFL spotlight.
