After healthy breakout season, Illini DB Matthew Bailey raises bar for himself: ‘I’m my hardest critic’

CHAMPAIGN — In so many ways, Matthew Bailey doesn’t know where to begin. The question itself was wide open for the Illini safety to go where he needed to go.

What, it’s worth wondering, was the value of a full season’s worth of reps for Bailey last year?

He played 180 snaps as a freshman in 2022, primarily as a dime safety. In 2023? Just nine months after he recovered from an offseason weight-room foot injury, he promptly had a season-ending shoulder injury in his first game of the season. So entering last season, Bailey just hadn’t played much college football.

Which is what brings Bailey to trying to find the right context for the value of his 876 snaps as the team’s starting strong safety last season.
