Alabama safety, who transferred from Penn State, re-enters transfer portal

Alabama safety King Mack has informed Alabama’s coaching staff that he will re-enter the NCAA transfer portal, a source told CBS Sports and 247 Sports’ Matt Zenitz on Friday evening.

Mack arrived at Alabama last May out of the transfer portal after one season at Penn State. He appeared in all 13 games this season as a sophomore for the Tide, seeing occasional playing time at safety and at the “Husky” position in the slot, as well as on special teams. Mack finished the season with 14 tackles.

Mack played at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and was a four-star prospect in the 2023 high school class rated No. 86 nationally. He played 13 games as a freshman for Penn State in 2023, mostly on special teams.

Mack’s decision comes hours after Alabama fired safeties coach Colin Hitschler, who also served as the Tide’s co-defensive coordinator.

Alabama has seven safeties projected for its 2025 roster, led by Keon Sabb, Bray Hubbard and Zavier Mincey. Other safeties on the roster are Red MorganDre Kirkpatrick Jr., Kameron Howard and incoming freshman Ivan Taylor.

Mack presumably would have been in contention to replace starting “Husky” safety DeVonta Smith after he left for Notre Dame through the transfer portal last month. Cornerback DaShawn Jones started in Smith’s place in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Tuesday and Morgan, a freshman in 2024, is another candidate to play “Husky” next season.

Mack is the fifth Alabama player to enter the transfer portal during a five-day window for undergraduates to enter following Tuesday’s bowl game. Graduate players can enter the portal at any time during the academic year, although any player must enter by February 1 to play for another SEC school in 2025.
