Alabama sees big drop in new Top 25 college baseball rankings after Auburn series loss

Alabama suffered a noticeable drop in Monday’s new Top 25 college baseball rankings after the Crimson Tide’s weekend series loss at Auburn.

The Alabama Crimson Tide hit a road block in SEC baseball play over the weekend when Rob Vaughn’s team made a trip to the Plains to face the Auburn Tigers in a Top 25 series.

The Crimson Tide (27-6 overall, 7-5 SEC) dropped two of three to Butch Thompson’s Tigers (22-10, 6-6) at Plainsman Park and needed some ninth-inning magic in the form of a go-ahead two-run home run by Justin Lebron in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader for a 6-5 victory.

Alabama fell behind 4-0 early in the nightcap Saturday en route to a 7-5 loss. Auburn blanked the Crimson Tide, 10-0, in seven innings in Friday’s series opener.

After a 2-2 week, Alabama fell in Monday’s new Top 25 college baseball rankings. While the Tide dropped two spots to No. 10 in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, that was pretty tame compared to Baseball America’s Top 25 rankings.

Alabama fell six spots to No. 14 in Baseball America’s Top 25, one spot below the No. 13 Florida State Seminoles (25-6) and one spot ahead of Tim Corbin’s Vanderbilt Commodores (24-8) at No. 15.

Over at D1 Baseball, the Crimson Tide fell four spots to No. 12, while Perfect Game dropped Alabama five spots to No. 13. Alabama placed one spot behind No. 12 Auburn and one spot ahead of No. 14 UC Irvine in Perfect Game’s rankings.

Dave Van Horn’s Arkansas Razorbacks (30-3 overall, 11-1 SEC) took the top spot in each of the major Top 25 rankings after sweeping last-place Missouri. The Razorbacks scored 51 runs in their weekend series: 21 on Friday, 14 on Saturday and 16 in Sunday’s finale.

Arkansas overtook the Tennessee Volunteers (28-4, 9-3) for the top spot, snapping a string of six consecutive weeks the Vols had spent at No. 1. Tennessee dropped its first series of the year Sunday at Texas A&M.

The Texas Longhorns‘ sweep of the Georgia Bulldogs (29-5, 8-4) in a top five series in Austin vaulted the Longhorns (26-4, 11-1) to No. 2 in each of the four major rankings, with the LSU Tigers (30-3, 10-2) at No. 3 in both the Baseball America and D1 Baseball rankings. The Clemson Tigers (30-5) were ranked No. 3 in Perfect Game’s Top 25.
