Alaska Legion Baseball holds annual college coaches clinic

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Alaska high school baseball players descended upon Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage Tuesday for a clinic with college baseball coaches.

Coaches from Colorado School of Mines, Regis University (CO), Chemeketa Community College (OR), Rio Hondo College (CA), Feather River College (CA), Dodge City College (KS), and Saint Martin’s University (WA) all made the trip to meet and drill the next generation of Alaska high school players looking to make the leap into the college ranks.

The event, organized by Feather River coach Terry Baumgartner, consisted of drills and exercises to help local players show their skills and improve, all while the coaches watched on.

″You’re just trying to teach them what things happen at the Division I level, Division II level, NAIA, pro ball, and give these guys, these kids, some exposure to that,” Baumgartner said. “We’re just try to teach them the game at a high level and teach them how fun it can be too.”

While most of the players in attendance represented the Cook Inlet Conference and greater Anchorage area, some, including Jett Brophy and Daniel Steffensen, came up from the Kenai Peninsula. Brophy’s Soldotna squad just beat Steffensen and Kenai Central in the DII baseball championship. Now, the two share the same Legion jersey – and the same desire to hone their skills.

“Just kind of seeing where you’re at among the state,” Steffensen explained. “Division II you don’t really face the best competition, so it’s good to see what the guys in Anchorage are capable of.”

“It’s nice having people from all teams come together and see how they are,” Brophy added.

The clinic will run through Thursday, culminating with the Legion All-Stars taking on the Alaska Baseball League’s Anchorage Bucs at 6 p.m. at Mulcahy Stadium.
