Alex Bregman Rumors: Where Red Sox Competitor Stands After Splashy Move

There was reason to believe a recent marquee MLB move helped the Red Sox’s chances of landing Alex Bregman, but that might not be the case.

The Tigers on Sunday reportedly landed Jack Flaherty, one of the best starting pitchers available in free agency. The addition was made mere hours after a related report from ESPN’s Buster Olney, who noted how Detroit could pivot to Flaherty if it didn’t land Bregman.

Well, it might not be an “either-or” situation in Motor City. Shortly after the news of Flaherty’s agreement broke, Olney followed up with a note on Bregman.

“After signing Jack Flaherty and augmenting their rotation, the Tigers are one of the teams pursuing Alex Bregman,” the veteran MLB insider posted to X.

Olney’s report obviously wasn’t the best news for the Red Sox, who reportedly remain in the mix to sign the star third baseman. While it’s unclear where exactly the Tigers stand in terms of likelihood of adding Bregman, they appear to be very much still in the race. The Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzold, like Olney, reported the Tigets are “still interested” in Bregman even after adding Flaherty.

Not to mention, the Houston Astros might be back on the prowl for Bregman after previously positioning themselves as unlikely to pursue a reunion. All told, the Red Sox seem to have multiple competitors as the fight to sign the two-time World Series champion rolls on.
