Alex Bregman watch: Houston Astros back in talks with Detroit Tigers free agent target?

There’s a new bidder in the glacially paced Alex Bregman sweepstakes … or is that an old one.

The free agent third baseman who is being pursued by the Detroit Tigers — although there’s a “value gap” between the Tigers and Bregman’s representation — is reportedly in talks with the Houston Astros, his MLB club for his first nine seasons.

Houston Astros third base Alex Bregman hits a single during the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park on Jun 12, 2024 in San Francisco, California.

The Athletic reported Thursday night that talks between Bregman and the Astros have resumed, a few weeks after Houston had apparently moved on from the free agent. Houston acquired former Tigers prospect Isaac Paredes to play third base and signed free-agent Christian Walker on a long-term deal after Bregman rejected the Astros’ six-year, $156 million offer at the start of the MLB offseason.

The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays were the other teams with the most reported interest in Bregman during the 2024-25 offseason. It was thought that the Astros closed the door on a Bregman reunion in mid-December by trading for third baseman Isaac Paredes and signing first baseman Christian Walker.

A two-time All-Star, Bregman has spent his first nine MLB seasons with the Astros (2016-24). He is a Gold Glove-winner at third base and won World Series titles in 2017 and 2022, earning MVP honors for his 2022 performance.

He was selected by the Astros with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 draft. He switched to third base in 2016 because the Astros already had a shortstop in Carlos Correa, who now plays for the AL Central-rival Minnesota Twins.
