Clemson forward Ian Schieffelin was an All-ACC performer for the Tigers basketball team this past year. Now he is ready to see what kind of impact he can have on the football field.
Schieffelin has taken Clemson coach Dabo Swinney up on his offer to join the Tigers football team. He is listed on the school’s official website as a tight end.
The Grayson, Georgia native focused on basketball in high school, but at 6-foot-8, 240 pounds, he clearly has the size to make an impact on the football field.
Schieffelin officially announced that he is joining the Clemson football program on Instagram Friday afternoon.
“Excited for the next chapter! Go Tigers!!” he posted.
Ian Schieffelin was named second-team All-ACC this past season for the Tigers after starting all 34 games. He averaged 12.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per contest. He was also a key contributor on Clemson’s Elite 8 team in 2024, averaging 10.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
He is joining a Clemson football program that is expected to be one of the best in the ACC and perhaps the country this coming season.
The Tigers won the ACC and reached the College Football Playoff in 2024 and return a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, including star quarterback Cade Klubnik and star defenders Peter Woods and T.J. Parker.
Clemson is in the top 10 in most way-too-early top 25’s for the 2025 season.
Schieffelin spoke with ESPN about his decision to join the Clemson football team.
“I’ve been just training for basketball, getting ready for the next level,” Schieffelin said. “Dabo just walked me through the opportunity he was willing to give me, and it all sounded great, something I wanted to jump on. It really just sparked my interest in wanting to try, and being able to put on a Clemson jersey again was very enticing to me. To be able to be coached by Dabo and [tight ends coach Kyle] Richardson is just a huge opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
Schieffelin isn’t ruling out a return to basketball down the line, but for now, he is ready to help the Tigers football team.
“I’ll see how these next six months go, see how development goes, see if I really like playing football. But I think this is a good opportunity for the next six months,” he said.
Clemson is in need of help at tight end after losing starter Jake Briningstool to the NFL.
