All-Pro superstar retires from NFL after 12 seasons

Former New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Terron Armstead has officially called it a career. Armstead announced the news at a party in Miami on Saturday night, which was attended by some of his top former and current teammates, including Drew Brees.

Armstead became a stalwart for the Saints and Dolphins offensive lines over his 12-year career. However, injuries sapped Armstead of his true potential, and despite being one of the best tackles in the NFL, he was only named an All-Pro once.

The Saints drafted him in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Arkansas Pine-Bluff. He stayed in New Orleans for most of his career, playing there for nine seasons before jumping to the Dolphins in 2022. He was selected for five Pro Bowls.

Armstead should have retired even earlier. In 2024, a doctor recommended he get knee replacement surgery at just 32 years old. Instead, Armstead chugged along and continued to play, but one more season was all that he had in him.

“The doctor told me, like, ‘Terron, to be honest with you, you need to replace this knee. You need a knee replacement. There’s no injection, there’s no surgery (as another option),’ ” Armstead said via the Palm Beach Post. “I left that day, on a Monday, I went home and I just sat with that — like there’s one thing I didn’t want to leave the game with. It’s permanent damage.”

Now, Armstead will head into retirement, where he will get his knee fixed at some point. He will be remembered as one of the best tackles of his era. He will unlikely make the Hall of Fame, but his ascent from an FCS standout to NFL star is a path that is less-traveled than most in the league.
