An all-time Kentucky gaffe is ranked on ESPN’s list of top plays since 2000

Since the turn of the century, Kentucky Wildcats football has had its share of memorable moments and monumental victories. Their win over top-ranked LSU in 2007 was something fans will never forget. Unfortunately, there have also been some not-so-great moments in that time as well.

ESPN recently ranked the top 25 college football plays since the year 2000, and Kentucky made an appearance on the list, but not one they wanted. The 2003 Bluegrass Miracle sounds nice, but it one of the toughest games Wildcats fans have ever had to endure.

Kentucky led a ranked LSU Tigers team 30-27 with seconds left on the clock, and LSU buried at their own 26-yard line. With one play remaining, Marcus Randall dropped back and threw a hail mary. The ball came down around the UK 25-yard line, but instead of falling to the ground, a Kentucky defender tipped it forward into the hands of Devery Henderson who snatched it out of the air and scored the game-winning touchdown.

Confusion reigned after the game until it became clear that the Wildcats had lost, and Big Blue Nation was stunned. It was a devastating result.

ESPN ranked the play as the 17th best since 2000. They summed it up well, saying “Wildcat players had already hit coach Guy Morriss with the Gatorade bath. And then LSU committed grand larceny with a 74-yard Hail Mary Plus.”
