Area Briefs: Three Wood baseball players sign with colleges

James Wood High School’s Logan Bower, Cade Cornwell and Zach Woskobunik signed to play college baseball at a signing ceremony on Monday. 

Bower will play at Division II Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, where he will study physical education.

Through the Colonels’ first nine games, Bower led the team in batting average, hitting .458 with a home run, 12 RBIs and 10 runs. Bower also leads the team in on-base percentage at .594 and is first on the team in strikeouts with 17 and second on the team in ERA with 1.4 in 10 innings pitched. Last year, he was named a Class 4 Northwestern District Second Team selection and finished 12th in the area in batting average (.318), 13th in runs (14) and tied for 11th in strikeouts (29). 

Shepherd was 20-21 and in fifth place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division as of Tuesday afternoon.

Woskobunik signed to attend Division III Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where he will study biology. Woskobunik has hit .385 with nine runs and a .541 on-base percentage. 

Lycoming was 19-15 and in third place in the Landmark Conference as of Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors brought back their baseball program in 2023 after not fielding a team since 1971. 

Cornwell signed to continue his baseball career at Camp Community College — a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association — in Franklin, where he will major in general studies. He is tied for second on the team in runs with 11.

Baseball: Clarke 15, Stonewall Jackson 3

NEW MARKET — Clarke County defeated Stonewall Jackson on the road in game shortened to five innings on Tuesday to win its fourth straight contest. 

The Eagles (8-3, 4-1 district) scored one run in the first inning, two in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth and six in the fifth.

Softball: Clarke 4, Stonewall Jackson 2

QUICKSBURG — Clarke got out of a seventh-inning, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Stonewall Jackson on Tuesday.

After the Eagles (5-5, 3-2 district) gave up a two-out run that brought Stonewall Jackson within two scores, a single and two walks put three runners on base. Olivia Parker then struck out the final batter to seal the victory and finish with five strikeouts while allowing two earned runs in 5.0 innings. Parker also finished 1 for 2 with a run, a double and an RBI. 

Clarke scored one run in the first inning, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Handley 18, Unity Reed 2

MANASSAS — Handley’s Haley Davis hit for the cycle to lead Handley to a run-rule victory over Unity Reed in a game shortened to five innings on Tuesday. 

The Judges (2-5) scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second, 11 in the third and one in the fifth. Davis finished 4 for 5 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs.

WINCHESTER — Isaac Carter scored two early goals to lead Handley to a win over Fauquier on Tuesday. The Judges are 8-1.

Clarke County 3, Stonewall Jackson 2

QUICKSBURG — Clarke County won its second Bull Run District game in two days by defeating Stonewall Jackson on Tuesday. The Eagles are 5-4 (3-1 district).

Clarke County leaders: Johny Mercer, Carter Frame 1 goal, 1 assist each; Bryce Jacobson 1 goal; Tanner Smith 1 assist.

James Wood 5, Brentsville 2

WINCHESTER — Bradyen Pineda had two goals and one assist and Daylin Paige had two goals to help James Wood snap a three-game losing streak in a win over Brentsville on Tuesday. The Colonels are 5-3-1.

Other James Wood leaders: Santiago Rojas 1 goal, 1 assist); Owen Swiger, Jesus Hernandez 1 assist each. 

Girls’ soccer: Sherando 2, Liberty 0

STEPHENS CITY — Sherando improved to 9-0 with a win over Liberty on Tuesday.

James Wood 2, Brentsville 2

NOKESVILLE — Alaynah McGuire had 15 saves to help James Wood tie two-time defending Class 3 state champion Brentsville on Tuesday. The Colonels are 6-3-1.

WARRENTON — Mia Hudson scored on a penalty kick to help Handley tie Fauquier on Tuesday. The Judges are 7-1-1.

NOKESVILLE — Handley won all six singles matches and three doubles matches in a win over Brentsville on Tuesday.

The Judges are 8-0.

College softball: SU drops doubleheader at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER — Shenandoah dropped both games of a midweek double header against Bridgewater on Tuesday, losing both games 8-0. 

In Game 1, the Hornets (17-19, 10-10 ODAC) fell in six innings after giving up three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and four in the sixth. 

SU’s only two hits came off the bats of Kara Watkins (1 for 2) and Allison McQueeney (1 for 2, walk). Bridgewater (26-12, 16-4) had nine hits in the victory. Meghan Gaskins took the loss, allowing three earned runs and five hits in 2.1 innings. 

In Game 2, SU fell in five innings after allowing five runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. 

Sarah Medellin (1 for 2) was the only Hornet to record a hit. The Eagles had eight hits and were walked six times.

College baseball: Eastern Mennonite 13, SU 3

HARRISONBURG — Shenandoah couldn’t overcome an early 5-2 deficit on Tuesday, falling to Eastern Mennonite in a game shortened to eight innings.

The Hornets (23-13, 13-7 ODAC) were led by Brody Pickette, who hit 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Jaime Padilla went 2 for 3 with two runs and a walk. 

Eastern Mennonite (11-21, 6-14) scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and four in the eighth.
