Arkansas’ Gage Wood tosses the third no-hitter in Men’s College World Series history as Arkansas tops Murray State.
NCAA
OMAHA, Neb. — Arkansas baseball’s futility against LSU at the College World Series continued in 2025, and a magical season came to an end Wednesday night in heartbreaking fashion.
The No. 3 Razorbacks (50-15) fell to the No. 6 Tigers (50-15) 6-5 in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Jared Jones hit a walk-off single off the glove of second baseman Cam Kozeal to send LSU into the championship series against Coastal Carolina. The loss marked Arkansas’ second defeat to LSU this week and dropped the Hogs to 0-5 all-time against their SEC rival in Omaha.
Arkansas led 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth. Justin Thomas Jr. delivered a two-run single to give the Hogs a lead, and Dave Van Horn turned to freshman Cole Gibler to try and record the final three outs. He had two outs with runners on first and second when a line drive to left field looked like it would end the game and extend the Arkansas season.
But Charles Davalan misplayed the ball off the bat of Luis Hernandez. He slipped in the outfield and the ball caromed off his glove and into the left field corner, allowing both runs to score and tie the game at 5-5.
Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn made a pitching change and went to Jimenez, but the righty couldn’t get the 27th out of the game in his second appearance in as many days. Jones hit a home run earlier in the game, but the Hogs elected not to walk the LSU slugger with first base open.
It was a wild ending. The Hogs trailed 2-1 entering the eighth inning, but they loaded the bases with one out. Ryder Helfrick hit a potential double-play grounder to third base, and the catcher got down the line quickly, beating a low throw that Jones couldn’t corral. That allowed Wehiwa Aloy to round third and score behind Davalan to give Arkansas a 3-2 lead.
Jones made up for the error with his home run in the next half inning, and he ended the Hogs’ season roughly 45 minutes later.
