Arkansas bounces back with gutsy win over TCU, 2-1

The Arkansas Razorbacks (5-1) defeated TCU (5-1) 2-1 in Game 2 of the College Baseball Series on Saturday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The fifth-ranked Razorbacks handed the Horned Frogs their first loss of the season on the back of superb pitching and opportunistic defense in front of a raucous crowd of 17,994, the second largest ever to see a college baseball game at Globe Life Field.

ANOTHER COLD START

The Razorback coaching staff retooled the lineup in the offseason via the transfer portal. They wanted to be more athletic and produce runs in other ways than the long ball. Through six games, nothing has changed. The Hogs used two solo home runs last night for their only runs of the game and were held scoreless through six innings tonight. The only hits in the first six innings came via singles from Kendall Diggs and Justin Thomas.

TCU starter Tommy LaPour used a fastball/slider combination to keep the Hogs guessing through the first three innings of play. LaPour’s fastball sat 95-98 mph with late arm-side run. The Hogs’ timing got better the second time through the lineup as they hit more line drives, but none of them were for a hit. LaPour was pulled after issuing walks to Logan Maxwell and Brent Iredale to start the seventh inning.

ROOT DAZZLES

Junior Zach Root turned in another sterling performance for the Hogs, going five innings with 10 strikeouts and two walks. An error by Gabe Fraser in the fourth inning resulted in the only run allowed by Root. His fastball was up to 95 mph, and TCU struggled with his off-speed arsenal all night.

Root was at his best throwing his slider away from the Horned Frogs’ lefties as the batters had trouble picking up the spin resulting in numerous whiffs. He leads the Hogs with 18 strikeouts in 11 innings this season.
