Around the Empire: Yankees news

The Athletic | Chris Kirschner and Brendan Kuty: The long march to the World Series began yesterday, as pitchers and catchers reported to George M. Steinbrenner Field and the Yankees’ spring training facilities. With their first team workout scheduled for today, Chris Kirschner and Brendan Kuty break down the biggest questions that we will look to answer in the next six weeks — most of which revolve around the Yankees’ re-tooled offense after the departure of Juan Soto in free agency.

New York Post | Greg Joyce: Amidst all the excitement of spring training’s start inevitably come the news that some players suffered injuries during offseason training. This year, it is reliever Jake Cousins who reported to camp with an injury — a right forearm strain, to be precise. Since he’s already a couple of weeks into a three-to-four weak shutdown period, Cousins could start his throwing program as early as next week; however, that short delay might be enough for him to start the season on the injured list.

According to Aaron Boone, Clayton Beeter also had a shoulder issue this winter, but is fortunately past it.

MLB Trade Rumors | Anthony Franco: A few hours after inking Tyler Matzek to a minor league deal on Monday evening, the Yankees added one more catcher to the mix: Ronaldo Hernández. A former top prospect with the Rays and Red Sox and who spent last year in the Diamondbacks farm system, Hernández likely represents spring training depth, but he will have the chance to compete with J.C. Escarra, Alex Jackson, Jesus Rodriguez, and (presumably) Ben Rice for the backup catcher job.

CBS Sports | Mike Axisa: Even as spring training dawns, winter still has not yet run its course in the baseball world. Numerous questions still remain, with several high-profile players currently available as either free agents (e.g., Alex Bregman) or trade targets (e.g., Nolan Arenado). Even beyond the still-burning hot stove, however, the upcoming weeks expect to showcase a wide range of stories, ranging from the return of the pre-Nike jerseys (thankfully ending what will ultimately be a one-year mistake) to the early signs of another lockout when the current CBA ends following the 2026 season.
