Around the Empire: Yankees news

CBS Sports | Mike Axisa: It’s Subway Series time, with the Mets, and Juan Soto, coming to the Bronx this weekend. Axisa goes position-by-position, evaluating the state of both New York rosters, and putting together an All New York team if you decided to mash the two sides together. This should be a fun series, with both teams looking like one of the stronger squads in each of their respective leagues, with the added intrigue of Soto’s return to his old digs.

The Athletic | Brendan Kuty and Will Sammon: ($) It’ll be all eyes on Soto when he takes the field in a Mets uniform tonight. Soto said he’s prepared for what’s come, telling reporters, with a smile, that he’s “expecting the worst.” The 26-year-old star was sensational during his year in the Bronx, but he spurned the Yankees in free agency in favor of Steve Cohen and the Mets. He’ll surely be subjected to loud boos, but the real show might be how Soto tries to respond to the vitriol in the batter’s’ box.

New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: A couple weeks into the season, the Yankees’ starting rotation looked like a major question mark, populated by Max Fried and a number of players fans had a hard time putting faith in. But the beleaguered unit has stepped up over the last month, and among the improvers has been young Will Warren. Though the right-hander’s top-line numbers still look shaky, Warren has flashed at times and was excellent on this recent west coast stint, turning in strong starts in Sacramento and Seattle. He set a career high with nine strikeouts in his most recent start, pushing his K/9 rate his year to 11.0. The Yankees will be thrilled if Warren can continue to improve into the summer.
