Astros part ways with outfielder Ben Gamel, and make other moves

HOUSTON — With just days to go until opening day, the Houston Astros are trimming their roster, and on Saturday, they cut an outfielder who saw playing time last season.

The Astros announced they’ve granted outfielder Ben Gamel his unconditional release. Last season, Gamel had 81 at-bats for  Houston, hitting .247 with one home run and four runs batted in.

Gamel, a Florida native, was a 10th round pick of the Yankees in 2010 and has been in the Majors since 2016. He played for the both the New York Yankees and Mets, Seattle, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and San Diego before coming to Houston. Gamel is a career .252 hitter with 41 home runs and 204 RBIs.

That wasn’t the only move the Astros made on Saturday. They also released left-handed pitcher Jalen Beeks and told right-handed pitcher Miguel Castro and infielder Luis Guillorme that they won’t make the opening day roster.

On the injury front, Houston announced right-handed pitchers Kaleb Ort and Forrest Whitley will start the season on the injured list.

The season opener is this Thursday, March 27 at Daikin Park against the Mets.
