Atwell to continue baseball career at Western Kentucky University

Owensboro Catholic’s Brady Atwell has signed with Western Kentucky University to continue his baseball and academic career. While his senior season on the diamond has yet to begin, Atwell helped lead the Aces to two district titles, two region titles and a semi-final appearance in the state tournament.

Atwell heard from multiple schools including Kentucky and Louisville but appreciated the opportunity to play close to home that attending Western Kentucky presented.

I am really excited and I couldn’t feel better about the decision I made and my future,” Atwell said. “…Western really stuck out to me being so close to home and how the program is projecting and what the coaches had to say… I always want to be close to home and close to my family where they can come and watch me. That meant more to me than going somewhere cool.”

It also helps that his older brother is already a student there.

“To have my older brother there is really cool,” Atwell said. “It is something you don’t get to do often. We went to high school together and now that we are going to be at college together, it makes things easier.”

During his freshman season, Atwell realized that if he put all of his time and effort into baseball, he could play where he wanted at the next level. He took advantage of his tools and skillset, allowing him to play loose and free. Consistency was the biggest focus especially when it came to improving his throwing angle and bat path.

Atwell’s decision to pursue college baseball might be a surprise to some because the senior leaves a lasting legacy on the football field. He helped lead the Aces to back-to-back 2A state finals appearances, going 28-2 over that span. Atwell ended his Owensboro Catholic football tenure as the school leader in completion rate (67%), passing yards (11,631), passing touchdowns (153), yards per completion (7.9), total yards (13,844), and total touchdowns (201).

But to Atwell, baseball has always been his true love.

“It was what I liked most,” Atwell said. “I really love baseball and that is my true passion and that is what ultimately led me to this decision.”

With his college decision in the rearview mirror, the senior can finally enjoy the moment, get back to being a kid, and do what he loves. He also acknowledged that the job isn’t finished, with his eyes fully set on a state title.

“We went to the final four last year,” Atwell said. “We have a lot of guys coming back, and it’s on me to win state and do it all over again.”
