It’s a long way from tropical North Queensland to San Francisco, but that’s the move Cairns Taipans point guard Taran Armstrong is about to make having reportedly signed his first NBA deal.
The 23-year-old Tasmanian has reportedly signed with the Golden State Warriors on a two-way contract.
In 23 games with the Taipans this season, Armstrong has averaged 17.1 points, 4.7 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game.

The 198cm Burnie product is the first Tasmanian to secure an NBA deal, and could see him line up alongside Steph Curry – one of the greatest NBA players of all time and the all-time leader in three pointers.
A two-way contract allows the player to split their time between the main NBA franchise and its affiliate in the second-tier G-League, which for Golden State is the Santa Cruz Warriors.
Speaking on ESPN’s Aussie Hoops Hour podcast last week, respected journalist Olgun Uluc said Armstrong was one of three Aussies on the radars of NBA sides.
He said Armstrong, Will Magnay and Matt Hurt are “the hottest names as far as guys who might get 10 days (contracts) or even two ways (contracts) at the end of the season”.
Armstrong played two seasons of American college basketball, where he averaged 10.9 points, 5.6 assists and 4.8 rebounds. He also broke the single-game assists record in December 2021, recording 15 against North Dakota.
