As the college baseball NCAA Tournament begins this week, a couple of SEC hosts have been put on ‘upset alert’ by Baseball America.
Tennessee and Georgia should both approach this weekend with some caution, according to some analysis from Baseball America’s Jacob Rudner. The Vols and Bulldogs are 2 of the 6 hosts who could be upset in the opening round, according to Rudner.
Georgia is the No. 7 national seed and is in line to host a Super Regional if it can get out of this weekend unscathed. The Bulldogs will be joined in the Athens Regional along with Duke, Oklahoma State and Binghamton.
Rudner highlighted Georgia’s hitter-friendly park while noting that both Duke and Oklahoma State have lefty sluggers who could take advantage of the right field wall at Foley Field.
As for Tennessee, the Vols are the No. 14 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament after winning the College World Series a year ago. Tennessee is in a pod with Wake Forest, Cincinnati and Miami (OH).
The biggest problem with the Vols, Rudner notes, is that they’re cold. Tennessee was unceremoniously dispatched from the SEC Tournament semifinals by Vanderbilt 10-0. Prior to a couple of upsets in Hoover, the Vols had lost consecutive SEC series to Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Auburn, LSU and Kentucky. Their last series victory vs. an SEC opponent was back in mid-April against Ole Miss.
Tennessee also has pitching concerns behind Liam Doyle, so Tony Vitello’s management of the rotation will be key to Tennessee moving on to a Super Regional.
Georgia’s opening game will be against Binghamton on Friday at 12 p.m. ET. Tennessee will open things up against Miami (OH) on Friday evening at 6 p.m. ET.
