ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team defeated the Clarkson University Golden Knights 8-3 on Saturday morning in the rubber match of a three-game series at Freeman Field, but Clarkson served as the home team as these games were supposed to be played in Potsdam. The Bombers improved to 12-8 on the season and 5-1 in Liberty League play.
The Bombers got on the board first in the top of the first inning, with Collin Feeney getting hit by a pitch. Then Ethan Fantel and Ethan Daddabbo followed that up with doubles surrounding a pop up to bring in the first two runs of the game.
In the top of the second inning Ryan Laubscher extended the Bombers lead to 3-0 with a lead-off home run on the second pitch of the at bat. The Bombers continued to threaten with back-to-back singles, but the Golden Knights were able to strand the runners.
Ithaca then got its second home run and second lead-off home run of the game from Riley Brawdy in the top of the fourth inning to make it 4-0.
In the Bottom of the fourth inning, Clarkson got on the board with four straight singles to make it 4-2. However, the Bombers were able to minimize the damage by stranding two runners with two strikeouts and a fly out.
The top of the sixth inning saw the Bombers tack on three more runs. After recording one out, they got back-to-back walks that led to Feeney driving in a run to make it 5-2. Feeney then stole second to make it second and third, with one out. This was followed by Fantel loading the bases by working out a walk on a seven-pitch at bat. Logan Scully then made it 7-2 with a single, and Daddabbo recorded a single of his own, but the Golden Knights made the out at home to get the second out. Clarkson then ended the inning with a ground out.
Clarkson threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting runners on first and second, but two strikeouts helped keep the Bombers out of trouble.
Later in the bottom of the eighth inning the Golden Knights started a push with a lead-off walk and fielder’s choice that advanced the runner to second. A single then brought a run home to make it 7-3 in favor of the Bombers. Another walk then made it first and second with one out. However, a strikeout and a picked off runner ended the inning.
The Bombers added some insurance in the top of the ninth inning. Matt Curtis singled with one out, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Laubscher then brought him home with another single to make it 8-3. The Bombers then closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth to win 8-3.
Jack Picozzi pitched six innings of two-run baseball with only one earned run. Danny Drotos and Cooper Albert also combined for three innings of one run baseball in relief.
The Bombers next matchup is at 3:30 p.m. at home on Friday at Freeman Field against RIT.
