Stony Brook University head baseball coach Matt Senk recorded his 950th career victory when the Seawolves defeated Niagara, 15-7, in their home opener March 7 at Joe Nathan Field.

Senk is one of only 11 active college baseball coaches to reach 950 career wins.

Matthew Jackson led the Stony Brook offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, and five RBI. George Adams won his second game of the season out of the bullpen with 3.2 shutout innings.

Senk is Stony Brook’s longest-tenured coach and is in his 35th season leading the Seawolves. He has posted 27 winning seasons, is a three-time America East Coach of the Year, and was named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Coach of the Year in 2012 after leading Stony Brook to 52 wins and the College World Series, when the Seawolves “shocked the world” by defeating powerhouse Louisiana State University (LSU) in the Super Regional.

Senk has won seven regular season championships, six conference tournament titles, and his SBU teams have made six NCAA Tournament appearances. He is also a member of the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame and the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame.

Senk has seen 51 of his players go on to sign professional baseball contracts. Five of them made it to play in the major leagues — Joe Nathan, Travis Jankowski, Nick Tropeano, Tom Koehler and Daniel Zamora. Patrick Cantwell celebrated winning the 2023 World Series alongside Jankowski as the Texas Rangers’ bullpen coach.

Since Senk’s landmark victory, the Seawolves have gone 3-3 and are 8-9 overall as they head on a four-game road trip beginning at Rider March 19 before a three-game series at Delaware to begin the CAA conference schedule. Stony Brook returns home for Iona on March 25, and will host Northeastern March 28-30.
