Baseball drops series finale at UAlbany 6-4

ALBANY, N.Y. – Binghamton baseball (13-11, 4-2 America East) put the tying run on base in the ninth but couldn’t complete the rally and fell to host UAlbany (9-13, 3-3 AE) 6-4 in the series finale Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Bearcats, who have now won nine of their last 12 games.

Freshman center fielder Matt Bolton went 4-for-5 to raise his season average to .365 – tops among all America East freshmen. But Bolton had half the Bearcats’ hits as the rest of the lineup was held in check for the first time in the series.

The Great Danes pulled away from a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

Down 6-2, Binghamton made one final push in the ninth. Graduate first baseman Freddy Forgione led off with a single and senior catcher Zach Rogacki followed with a 2-run home run – his first of the season. A walk to junior shortstop Mike Stellrecht brought the tying run to the plate. After a strikeout, Bolton notched his fourth hit of the day to put the tying run on base. But a strikeout ended the game.

Senior third baseman Devan Bade drove in two runs – with an RBI groundout in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third. Bade ran his team-high RBI count to 22 this season, third-most in the conference.

Sophomore reliever Jake Dally had the most success of four Bearcat pitchers. He worked two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

Binghamton next heads to Olean for a Tuesday afternoon non-conference game at St. Bonaventure.
