
COLUMBIA – No. 1 Tennessee scored two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 5-all tie in a 7-5 win over the University of South Carolina baseball team on Saturday afternoon (March 29) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
After a scoreless first three frames, Tennessee plated three on a home run from Reese Chapman. Carolina answered with Jase Woita’s fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. The Gamecocks tied the game at three in the fifth as Beau Hollins, Jordan Carrion and Gavin Braland all singled to lead off the frame. Henry Kaczmar plated a run on a sacrifice fly and Nathan Hall brought in a run on a groundout.
Carolina took the lead in the sixth as Carrion’s fielder’s choice scored Kennedy Jones. Tennessee came back with a Cannon Peebles two-run home run in the eighth but Carolina tied the game again on Hollins’ RBI single that scored Evan Stone. The Volunteers plated the winning runs in the top of the ninth on an Andrew Fischer two-run home run.
Hollins had a career high four hits in the game, while Carrion and Kennedy Jones added two safeties. Brandon Stone took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts in three innings. Jarvis Evans threw the first six frames, striking out five and allowing four hits and three runs in six innings of work.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Carolina has had three players with four hits in this series. Ethan Petry and Jordan Carrion had four hits in last night’s game.
- Jarvis Evans now has a 3.62 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 32.1 innings pitched.
- Hall had his 17-game hit streak snapped on Saturday.
