LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Ithaca College baseball team split a pair of games against No. 21 Baldwin Wallace and previously ranked Case Western Reserve on Tuesday in Lexington, S.C. The Bombers topped Baldwin Wallace, 9-8, but lost to Case Western, 11-9, in a game at ended just before midnight.
Game One: Ithaca 9, Baldwin Wallace 8
The Bombers started off hot in the first inning, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Logan Scully with Camden Laney, who reached on a single. IC’s lead was short-lived, however, as Baldwin Wallace tied the game in the bottom of the first on a pair of bases loaded sacrifice flies.
Two errors on the Bombers led to three more runs for the Yellowjackets in the second inning to make the score 5-2 and the Baldwin Wallace plated another run in the third to build a 6-2 advantage.
IC regained the lead by plating six runs over the fourth and fifth innings to go back ahead, 8-6. In the fourth, Ryan Laubscher belted a two-run homer with Scully on base and then Ethan McDonough blasted a three-run shot in the fifth inning. Connor Pedersen plated the final run of the fifth on an RBI single to bring home Andrew McDermott.
Baldwin Wallace knotted the contest back up at 8-8 in the seventh inning on another error by the Bomber defense, followed by an RBI double.
Ithaca went back on top, 9-8, in the eighth inning on an RBI double from Laubscher that brought in McDermott for the eventual game-winning run.
Jack Colyer earned the win in 4.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts and two unearned runs on four hits. Sean Kelly picked up the save with by not allowing a run over the final 1.1 innings.
Game Two: Case Western 11, Ithaca 9
Laubscher continued his production into the contest with Case as he gave the Bombers an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single that scored McDermott.
The Spartans responded with a five-run top of the fourth on a three-run home run and back-to-back bases loaded walks to make it 5-1.
IC did not allow that big inning to deter its offensive approach as the Bombers got back to within a run in the bottom half of the fourth on a three-run home run off the bat of Collin Feeney with Riley Brawdy and Ethan Daddabbo on base.
Case would get a run back in the fifth on an error, but the Bombers would go back ahead, 8-6, in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homer from Scully, an RBI double from Daddabbo and a two-run blast from Laubscher.
The Spartans then scored three runs in the sixth, one in the eighth and one in the ninth to flip the lead back in their favor, 11-8. In the sixth, a wild pitch allowed one run to score and an error on the same play brought in another. Shortly after, a solo home run made it 9-8. Another wild pitch in the eighth gave Case a two-run lead and a solo home run in the ninth gave the Spartans a three-run cushion.
IC got a run back in the bottom of the ninth on a dropped third strike and error for the 11-9 final.
